A Monster of an idea…

by aileen on November 17, 2011

Following the lead of the 826 Literary Project (who run an amazing program) and use wonderful storefronts to house their project, the Ministry of Stories in London was set up a few years ago. Their storefront is Hoxton Street Monster Supplies – Purveyor of Quality Goods for Monsters of Every Kind. – and I’m in love. They just started an online store, so now monsters everywhere can get what they need, including cans of night terrors, ear wax and of course a vague sense of unease (tinned fear). (via wemadethis.co.uk who explain the story much better than I do). Expect to hear more about 826, The Ministry of Stories and We Made This. (I have a crush on all of them)

A symbol of remembrance…

by aileen on November 11, 2011

If I was in England (or any other Commonwealth Country) today I would be wearing a poppy. It’s a simple symbol of remembrance for all those who have died in the line of duty.

The poppy comes from the poem “In Flanders Fields” which refers to the poppies that bloomed in the fields where the battles of WW1 had just been fought. Their red color was taken as a symbol of the blood that was spilled.

If I had a poppy I would wear it with pride. It’s not a political stance, just a simple act of respect and remembrance.

At eleven O’clock today (11/11)  in England, people will pause, buses will stop, stores will cease trading, and a minute of silence will take place, a moment to reflect on what who we lost, and what we gained.
