2012

2012 – an interesting year.

by aileen on January 17, 2012

I just found this from JWT Intelligence and thought it was interesting. Number 10 made me smile – I think this will be the year of clever, at least I hope so. Clever can make such a difference.

2012 Manifesto… get your own

by aileen on December 29, 2011

I decided this year I needed more than a resolution or two… I needed a whole manifesto. Inspired by the Holstee Manifesto (that hangs in my living room) I thought it was time to get creative.

I created mine in indesign – but you could do pretty much the same thing in a word program (or other design program). If you don’t have access to a computer (or want to get really crafty) you could draw, paint, cut out words from magazines. Make it as personal as you can. You don’t have to give anything private away (some words can just trigger a meaning for you that no-one else will understand). Day dream a little while you make it. Give yourself something to live up to.

If you are using a computer consider sending it a local print shop who have a digital printer. They can do very impressive prints larger than you can, and charge very little. Mine is 9″ by 17″ and costs under a dollar. It has a quality that I can’t get from my home printer.

Go on it’s a new year, get creative.

Put it up where you can see it everyday – no forgotten resolutions this year!

If you need some help to get going fill out the questions here

UPDATE: Thank you to Craftgawker for featuring this post – welcome to all the new visitors from there, I am pleased to see you.

UPDATE 2: A few companies have asked me to work with them to produce one of these for the workplace – if you are interested in this let me know. Great for teams, departments or small companies.

UPDATE 3: Thank you to Craftzine for featuring this poster – I’m getting lots of feedback from people making their own versions, if you would like to please send me a photo of your poster and I’ll put together a gallery so you can all inspire others – Email

UPDATE 4: Checkout the new gallery - I will be adding more photos as I find them. If you would like yours including please email it to me  here – please include your name if you want it used – I am hoping to have some up today (friday 11th Jan) and add more over the weekend.

3 wishes…

by aileen on December 29, 2011

I’m obsessed with this stuff. If you have been anywhere near me in the last month you probably know about this.

It’s whimsical and slightly magical (and I love making people smile).

You make your wish, light the paper and it floats up into the air slowly where you catch it – sounds simple (and it is) but it’s a wonderful thing to do with a group of friends. You can find it on amazon* or from flyingwishpaper – it’s beautiful.

The thing I most want to do this year is….

by aileen on December 29, 2011

Love this idea from the good people over at Real Simple -

They suggest questions like:

The bad habit I want to kick this year is ___

The good deed I want to do this year is ___

The person I want to be more like this year is ___

The skill I want to learn this year is ___

You could add:

The person I most want to meet this year is ___

The band I want to see live this year is ___

The motto I will have for this year is ____

I’m sure you can think of many more… You can just write them for yourself, or write them and gather them up, read them aloud randomly and guess who wrote which one.

New posters from the Keep Calm Gallery (yes the people who originally bought you the Keep Calm print) -  I love this  - Woody Guthrie’s New Years Rulin’s from The Wooden Truth.

“In 1941 the great American singer-songwriter and folk musician Woody Guthrie wrote 33 new years ‘rulins’, resolutions that he made for the year ahead (1942). These words inspired Andrew Chapman at The Wooden Truth to put a selection together in a way that he felt worked for him, creating a design that has rhythm both poetically and typographically. In Andrew’s own words “Woody Guthrie’s 33 New Years Resolutions give us a view of an optimistic, serious, sensitive, funny man. Just dealing with the nine I chose to print here presented a big challenge but nearly 70 years on can’t we all feel the resonance of the last one?”

This two colour letterpressed poster has been printed on very delicate newsprint to achieve a look and feel of being authentically 1942. As Andrew says, “they have the feel of something you’d discover pinned to the back of a long forgotten shed door.”

What would your nine resolutions for this year be? I think I might make a poster…
