I see a table and I want to paint it black…

It’s not a secret but it may be news to you – I live in a white house – not all white, of course – some of the floors are wood, and we have an orange chair, Ok so it’s mostly white. A few years ago we were looking for our ideal dining room table (large, white) and just couldn’t find what we wanted. We ended up using 3 cheap Ikea tables (just for now) and found we loved the flexibility they gave us. We could move around the arrangement and seat 2 – 14 people easily. As we have used them they have gotten a little scratched and worse for wear (they were very inexpensive) so a couple of weeks ago we painted them – with blackboard paint. They look great, have already provided endless hours of fun, and seem to be wearing well. I can’t wait till Christmas!

What a totally cool website! As the grandmother of 4 little girls, ranging in age from 7 down to 14 months, I love, love, love the chalkboard paint tables. What a great idea!
Now I’ve got to find somewhere to use that idea. The girls would just love that. (I can’t paint my dining room table, it’s an antique that’s been in my hubby’s family for 4 generations.) They love to write and draw on the patio with colored chalk, but since I live in Pennsylvania, they can only do that certain months out of the year.
You are going to have to show pictures of the table after Christmas dinner. 🙂

November 3, 2011 at 10:11 amMary – do you have a wall or the back of a door you could use? I have done both in previous living spaces. We bought this paint for a wall but ended up using it on a table. The other think to look at is idea paint – it’s expensive but it’s meant to be amazing. I am planning to use it in my office.

November 8, 2011 at 10:23 amI’m just curious after lots of use how is the table paint holding up? Does it scratch easily? Is is very protective? Is is very smooth or is there an element of graininess to the paint once it’s down?

November 8, 2011 at 10:30 amChristina – great question. We put a couple of coats on and decided to treat it as roughly as we can for a while to test it thoroughly, knowing that we could add more coats if we needed. So far so great, it cleans well and hasn’t scratched yet. The surface is slightly grainy but not in a bad way, it actually makes the table look more expensive. I have recently read that you can make your own blackboard paint in any color by adding ‘unsanded grout’ – I am going to investigate soon!

November 8, 2011 at 8:30 pmThis is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. My girlfriend and I CONSTANTLY use post-it-notes for ideas, lists etc. I also have an 18 month old that I could forsee a creativity table/station using this idea. Thank you for the creative inspiration. I really like the “Idea Table” as well.

May 27, 2013 at 6:40 amI just used the regular old Chalk Board Paint from Lowes. I know there are lots of ways to make your own but, like you, I wanted to be sure of a good finish. It’s been used everyday and is still holding up well.
